A Journey into the Literary and Therapeutic World of a Psychotrauma Expert
The therapeutic writing workshop is part of art therapy, where expression is channeled through writing within a strict framework defined by the therapist. This framework imposes constraints of time, place, and form, thus encouraging the patient’s expression while providing a sense of security. Poetry and prose help access emotions and structure thoughts through imposed forms such as the sonnet, fable, or letter. These constraints help channel anxiety and connect inhibited thoughts and emotions. The goal is psychological flexibility and the restoration of self-esteem, supporting the patient’s inner reconstruction.
Writing is therapeutic because the words we write are not the same as the words we speak. The trace left by the act of writing anchors and externalizes what’s inside us. Writing allows for inner exploration and evokes intimacy. Working with the medium of therapeutic writing offers a form of healing when it is well-structured, and when the art therapist can guide and support the inner journey that unfolds during therapy.
